The survival of artisan fishermen is very difficult today, above all in the big cities where there are a lot of interests that dificult the lives of these communities and their activities. It seems like a miracle that some communities resist in some places.

The degradation of the environment is a mortal enemy of these people that depend on nature to survive. Big cities destroy coastal ecosystems, and many times the boats return without any fishes at all or with so few that it does not pay the effort and the expenses.

These men are very simple people. Their fathers and grandfathers were also fishermen but their sons, perhaps, will have another kind of job. They like to talk about their job and they are proud of the knowledge they have about the sea and about their trade. Some are conscious of their problems and difficulties. They also know that environment protection is important for everybody, and could be on their side in the fights for the survival of their communities.
