Images of Safety is a effort to document the community and environment - both the people and the physical space - of a safe shelter for victims of domestic violence.

My intent with this project is to break down some of the stigma attached to victims of domestic violence. From the start, I made the decision not to concentrate on the faces of the clients. This was in part, to protect my subjects and also to leave open the possibility that this could be me, or you. Your next-door neighbor, or co-worker. Your sister. I want the viewer to begin to imagine the experience of walking into a safe shelter and seeing something other than the implicit or explicit marks of violence.

This could be your house. Your kitchen. These images, in fact, could have been taken in my own home. It is this ambiguity of definition that I am aiming for. By looking closely at some of the things we all desire: things like respect, and dignity, and the right to speak openly and honestly, I am hoping to bridge the gap between those who have lived with violence and those who haven't. I'm hoping to break down the stigma attached to those who have been - or are now - a victim of domestic violence.

Imágenes de la seguridad busca documentar la comunidad y el entorno —tanto la gente, como el espacio físico— de un refugio para vícitmas de la violencia doméstica.

La intención del proyecto es romper con algunos de los estigmas asociados con las víctimas de la violencia doméstica. De entrada, tomé la decisión de no concentrarme en las caras de los clientes. En parte fue para proteger a mis sujetos, y también para insinuar la posibilidad de que podría tratarse de mí o de ustedes. Tu vecino o tu colega. Tu hermana. Quiero que el espectador se imagine la experiencia de entrar a un refugio y pueda ver otras cosas además de las marcas explícitas o implícitas de la violencia.

Este podría ser tu hogar. Tu cocina. De hecho, las imágenes podrian haber sido tomadas en mi propia casa. Mi meta es alcanzar esta ambigüedad de definición. Al mirar de cerca las cosas que todos deseamos, como el respeto, la dignidad, el derecho a hablar honesta y abiertamente, espero salvar la distancia entre los que han vivido con la violencia y los que no lo han hecho. Espero romper con los estigmas que se asocian con los que han sido, o son en este momento, víctimas de la violencia doméstica.
