MForty years ago I left the studio of Marcel Marceaux and joined the Soviet Circus. I have performed all over the world and I have brought laughter to thousands of people. Today, as you can see, I don’t travel very far. But I can still make the children laugh.

Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia has been confronted with grave internal and external obstacles. A staggering economy, territorial wars with Abkhazia and Ossetia, and the ongoing political pressures from Moscow have contributed to a heightened sense of survival. Despite these harrowing circumstances, the children continue to dance, the art schools are filled and the perseverance of a cultural identity strives forward. During my extensive time working and teaching in Republic of Georgia over the past few years I immersed myself in three distinct aspects of life in Georgia today:
1. Traditional village life
2. Children’s dance
3.Urban realities of the post-Soviet existence
Living with a family in the village of Garikula, a rural agrarian community in the central region of the country provided an intensely personal experience in which to understand life in this post-Soviet hangover. The village of Garikula serves as an important paradigm for the future of the Caucasus: a culturally pluralistic society. For hundreds of years, Greeks, Mongolians, Ossetians, Azeri, Armenian, Jewish and Georgian people lived together and prospered. There is much to cherish and there is much to endure. There is scant attention paid to this region of the Caucasus. My work attempts to capture a world that is slowly changing and is seldom heard from..

Hace 40 años dejé el estudio de Marcel Marceau y me uní al Circo Soviético. He actuado en todo el mundo y llevado risas a miles de personas. Hoy, como ven, ya no viajo muy lejos, pero todavía puedo hacer reír a los niños.

Desde su independenci de la URSS en 1991, Georgia ha enfrentado duros obstáculos. Una economía inestable, guerras territoriales con Abkhazia y Ossetis y las continuas presiones políticas de Moscú han resultado en un elevado sentido de supervivencia. A pesar de estas ddifíciles circunstancias, los niños siguen bailando, las escuelas de arte están llenas y la perseverancia de una identidad cultural sigue adelante. Durante el alrgo tiempo enseñando y trabajando en la República de Georgia en los últimos años, me he sumergido en tres distintos aspectos de la vide an Georgia: La vida rural tradicional, el baile infantil y las realidades urbanas de la vida post-soviética. EL vivir con una familia en el pueblo de Garikula, una comunidad rural en el centro del país, me ha proporcionado una experiencia personal muy intensa para comprender la vida en la resaca post-soviética.
