Comment:
I was born in a country that it doesn't exist anymore USSR. Of course the place still exists, name it's gone and with a name the system, the idols. The Iron Curtain was raised. The gates to the west were opened to the citizens of former Soviet empire.

Like thousands of my fellow country man I left my country to seek what's there in the west, to experience its freedom and wealth. To be a free man I came to London in 1995 and I got involved with the local Lithuanian community. The life was nothing like in promised Eldorado, new culture and language, not the first class accommodation, cost of living, feeling like a second class citizen of free country. Seeing how new immigrants pass their days in new society, I asked myself: Is this better?

Since Lithuania's independence in 1990 about 200.000 people of 3.7 million total population had left Lithuania. With Lithuanian's entry to European Union a similar number is expecting to leave. Most of who are young people, the future of their country. In my pictures I want to show every day life of the young people who left their country to seek better life abroad, a life that they never imagined.

Nací en un país que ya no existe: la URSS. Claro que el lugar sigue existiendo, el nombre se fué y con él un sistema y sus ídolos. Se levantó la Cortina de Hierro y se abrieron las puertas de Occidente a los ciudadanos de la ex-Unión Soviética.

Como miles de mis paisanos, dejé mi patria para buscar lo que había en Occidente, experimentar su libertad y su riqueza. Para convertirme en un hombre libre vine a Londres en 1995 y me involucré con la comunidad lituana. La vida no era nada parecida a ese prometido El Dorado: Nueva cultura y lenguaje, una vivienda no precisamente de primera, el alto costo de la vida y el sentirse como un ciudadano de segunda clase en un país libre. Al ver cómo lo pasaban los nuevos inmirgantes me pregunté ¿Es ésto mejor?

Desde su independencia en 1990, 200 mil personas de una población total de 3.7 millones han dejado Lituania. Con su próoxima entrada a la Unión Europea se espera que salga un número semejante. La mayoría gente joven, el futuro de su país.

En mis fotos quiero retratar la vida cotidiana de los jóvenes que dejan su país para buscar une mejor vida en el extranjero, un vida que nunca imaginaron.
