Comments
This is a work about the 15-25 years old people in Mauritania's
capital Nouakchott at the time of the "democratic transition".
It
seeks to show how they try to define their identity in a country
that has undergone significant changes for the last 20 years with
the vanishing of nomadism and an expansive urbanization.
Far from
the lands and lifestyles of their elders but often bred up in the
nostalgia of past, the youth of the "city of sands" daily
deal with tradition and modernity. Communitarian and tribal belongings
are still strong but less watertight than before.
And if religion
and family keep a proeminent place in everyone's life, young Mauritanians
also find spaces of autonomy and new ways of expressing themselves,
whilst hoping that the economical and political new deal will allow
them to build their future in their country. |

Comentarios
Este trabajo trata de los jóvenes de 15 a 25 años
de edad que habitan en la
capital de Muritania, Nouakchott, durante ésta época
de "transición a la democracia".
Lo que se busca
mostrar es cómo intentan definir su identidad en un país
que ha pasado por significativos cambios desde hace 20 años
con la desaparición del
nomadismo y un aumento de la urbanización. Alejados de la
tierra y modo de vida de sus ancestros, pero a menudo educados
dentro de la nostalgia del pasado, la juventud de "La ciudad
de las Arenas", cotidianamente
lidia
con la tradición y la modernidad.
Los lazos comunitarios
y tribales siguen fuertes, pero menos herméticos que en
el pasado. sSi bien la religión y la familia siguen ocupando
un lugar preeminente en la vida
de todos, los jóvenes mauritanos también encuentran espacios para
la autonomía y nuevas formas de expresión, esperando que el establecimiento
de nuevas estructuras económicas y políticas les permitan construir
un futuro para su país. |
