A communist former freedom fighter leaves the memorial sight that celebrate the execution by nazi troops of nine young men in the spring of 1944

My name is Giorgio Masnikosa and I live and work as a freelance photographer in Stockholm, Sweden  since 1985. After working with several european picture libraries and general freelancing I have started and completed the book Trieste…dell’amara dolcezza.

I'm  responsable for the layout, the photography and, in general of the entire conception. The book has been published  in Italy and Germany in autumn 1999.

The book is a collection of about seventy black and white photographstaken during my visits with my swedish family in my hometown Trieste in the years 1986-1996 in the unusual role of tourist in my own hometown.

It is not altough a touristic publication. The choice of the subjects is very personal. The places portrayed are spots that I love to visit from time to time.  Along with the photographs, twelwe poems (in italian with german translation) written by the local poet Umberto Saba, (1883-1957) makes the work a personal tribute and, in all modesty, a celebration of the city.

Un comunista antiguo combatiente abandona el sitio que conmemora a los nueve jóvenes ejecutados por tropas nazis en la primavera de 1944.

Me llamo Giorgio Masnikosa y desde 1985 vivo en Estocolmo, Suecia donde trabajo como fotógrafo independiente. Después de haber trabajado para varias bibliotecas europeas de fotografía y de realizar trabajo independiente en general, empecé y terminé el libro Trieste dell’ amara dolcezza.

Soy responsable de la diagramación, la fotografía y en general de toda la concepción del libro. Fue publicado en Italia y en Alemania en el otoño de 1999.

El libro reúne alrededor de setenta fotografías en blanco y negro tomadas durante las visitas que hice con mi familia sueca a Trieste, mi ciudad natal, entre 1986 y 1996 en el extraño papel de turista en mi propia tierra.

Aunque el libro no es una publicación turística. La elección de los temas es muy personal. Los lugares retratados son sitios que me encanta visitar de cuando en cuando. Doce poemas (en italiano y su traducción al alemán) escritos por el poeta local Umberto Saba (1883-1957) acompañan las fotografías y hacen del libro un tributo personal y, con toda modestia, una celebración de la ciudad.
