This small selection of work comes from a major project partly funded by the London Arts Board. The photographs document locations on a 50 mile walk known as the 'Green Chain', and reflect a prolonged engagement with the marginal landscapes of south-east London. The activity of walking, of observing is central to this, during both night and day. Today, an idea of landscape is molded by what we witness through the glass barrier of the window or windscreen of the train, bus or car. Landscape may be no more than a backdrop to life in transit. The time we have for observing landscape is not in tune with our perceptual time, which is dominated by the preponderance, immediacy, and transience of modern life. Behind this exists a layer of slow history, in the more permanent phenomena and topography - a natural order of dirt, trees, water, stone, etc. This work is concerned with the traces, the residue of signs that are evident in the relationships of modernity and the underlying layers of a more permanent nature.

Esta pequeña selección de imágenes proviene de un proyecto financiado por el Consejo para las Artes de Londres. Las fotografías registran lugares ubicados a lo largo de una caminata de 50 millas conocida como "La cadena verde" y reflejan un contacto constante con los paisajes marginales del sureste de Londres. La acción de caminar y observar es fundamental, tanto de noche como de día. Hoy, la idea de paisaje está mediada por lo que vemos a través de la barrera de cristal de las ventanas o del parabrisas del tren, autobús o automóvil. El paisaje puede no ser más que un telón de fondo para la vida en movimiento. El tiempo que disponemos para observar el paisaje no concuerda con nuestro tiempo perceptual, dominado por la inmediatez y la transitoriedad de la vida moderna. Detrás existe una capa de historia lenta en los fenómenos más permanentes y en la topografía, el orden natural del polvo, el agua, la piedra, etc. La preocupación de este trabajo son los rastros, el residuo de los signos evidentes en la relación entre la modernidad y las capas subyacentes de naturaleza más permanente.
