I want to render a portrait of the artist (myself, of course) and, of course, that of Angelina Pérez Ibargüen, Mexican ceramic sculpture artist. Since 1999 I have been writing a book using images instead of words, body language instead of text, drawing between the lines, drafting the likeness of an artist who is a woman as seen by a woman artist: woman as subject, artist as adjective and art as verb. The composition aspires to illuminate 'woman' and reveal the 'female artist'. I hope to rewrite James Joyce's Stephen Dedalus in "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" and overwrite Henry James' Isabel in "Portrait of a Lady".

I chose to photograph face, hands and feet in the opening, but the closing chapters, full body shots, remain as yet on the tip of my tongue, unprocessed, undeveloped, unprinted, some yet to be exposed. This volume is still a work in progress. And yet, I hope that even now, each image stands on its own as a portrait of Me/Her. I also hope that the collection is substantially more substantial.
