Traditional cultures have precious knowledge about human life. Its
basis is a belief in its
cyclic character. Human life is not a linear passage from birth to
death, but it comprises some
subsequent stages. They are different in quality, and there is a
significant transformation between
successive phases. In a way each of them is like a new birth. This
transformation is a trouble
spot, it is difficult and somewhat dangerous, and therefore it
requires a ritual.
Rites of passage are „all the initiations that sanctionize affiliation with a group, granting new rights and imposing new responsibilities" . There are many such situations in life, of more or
less significance. There are rites that we set and arrange for
ourselves, and those related to
our religion or our culture. In a Catholic life, these will
undoubtedly be the baptism, the First Communion, the wedding and the funeral. There are also the
confirmation, Christmas and
Easter. All the holidays related to summer and winter solstices and
New Year are also celebrations
of passage. And such can also be the end of school, the moment of
graduation, leaving the family
home, changing a job, retirement.

Las culturas tradicionales tienen un conocimiento precioso sobre vida humana. Su base es la creencia en su carácter cíclico. La vida humana no es un recorrdo lineal del nacimiento a la muerte, sino que abarca varias etapas subsecuentes. Son diferentes en calidad, y hay una transformación significativa entre las fases sucesivas. De alguna manera cada uno de ellas es como un nuevo nacimiento. Esta transformación es problemática, difícil y algo peligrosa, y por lo tanto requiere un ritual. Los Ritos de pasaje son todos las iniciaciones que sancionan la afiliación a un grupo, concediendo nuevos derechos e imponiendo nuevas responsabilidades". Hay muchas de estas situaciones en la vida, más o menos importantes.Están los ritos que creamos y arreglamos para nosotros mismos, y aquellos relacionados con nuestra religión o nuestra cultura. En la vida católica, éstos serán indudablemente el bautismo, la primera comunión, la boda y el entierro. Están también la confirmación,la Navidad y la Pascua. Todos los días de fiesta relacionados con los solsticios de verano y de invierno y el Año Nuevo son también celebraciones de un pasaje. Y puede también ser el fin de cursos en la escuela, el momento de la graduación, dejar el hogar de la familia, cambiar de trabajo, y el retiro.
