Denise Prince Martin’s series of anonymous
portraits Women engage the viewer with semiotic allure
and a sense of the intangible. Her subjects
participate in their environment by their presence
alone. Centered formally in the frame, each woman
bears a straight or plain _expression and most gaze
directly out, leaving their context to speak as
subject. The combination of what each is wearing,
holding and where she is standing is coded with
meaning and draws the viewer into alcoves of the
imagination. The images evoke both mythic female
archetypes and everyday women who are burdened by the
worldly distractions of modern life. In that respect
Prince Martin is playing with and exploring the
conventions of character and narrative found
throughout the history of women in art.
The photographs also mimic a sophisticated breed of
fashion advertisement, though they are stripped of
advertising’s subterfuge. The imperfect interplay of
connotations challenges the traditional method of
deciphering meaning and draws attention to the
presence of signifiers as much as their significance.
These women also look uncomfortable, inexperienced or
imperfectly prepared to embody the dream that
advertising photography employs. And yet, because mass
media has become such an ingrained part of popular
culture, they each seem innately aware of their
conversation with the viewer. In turn, each one of
them maintains her dignity within the space. Without
alienating the aesthetic custom of “honoring beauty,” these women share a delightful refusal to be anything
more or less than an imperfect realization of the
dream. Theirs is a beauty of the real. .

La serie "Mujeres" de retratos anónimos de Denise
Prince Martin atrapan al espectador con una atracción
semiótica y un sentido de lo intangible. Sus sujetos
participan en su entorno con su sola presencia.
Centradas en cuadro, cada mujer tiene una expresión
severa o simple y casi todas miran a otro lado dejando
que el contexto hable. La combinación de lo que cada
una está vistiendo o tomando en sus manos o dónde está parada, esta llena de significado y lleva al
espectador a los recovecos de la imaginación. Las
imágenes evocan tanto a los arquetipos míticos como a
las mujeres cotidianas llevando la carga de las
distracciones mundanas de la vida moderna.
Prince
Martin juega y explora con las convenciones sobre el
carácter y la narrativa encontrada sobre la mujer a
través de toda la historia del arte.
Las fotos también imitan a la sofisticada fotografía
de modas aunque se les quita el subterfugio de la
publicidad. El imperfecto juego de connotaciones reta
el método tradicional de decifrar el significado y
apunta tanto a la presencia de significantes como de
significado. Estas mujeres también se ven incómodas,
sin experiencia o no bien preparadas para encarnar el
sueño empleado por la foto publiciatria. Sin embargo,
puesto que los medios masivos se han convertido en
parte tan importante de la cultura popular, cada una
parece conciente, de manera innata, de una
conversación con el espectador. No obstant,e cada una
mantiene su dignidad en su espacio. Sin perturbar la
costumbre estética al "honrar la belleza", estas
mujeres comparten una deliciosa negativa a ser nada
más que una imperfecta realización del sueño.
Esta es
una belleza de lo real.
