When I first started
out as a photographer, I took a picture of three blind street musicians
in the city of Puebla. This image helped me understand the great importance
of documentary photography and it encouraged me to do research on the
social conditions of Mexico's blind people.
In 1987 I decided
to verify the number of blind people that lived in the country. I did
not find any official statistics. According to information I obtained
from different newspapers there is an estimated 400,000 of them.
I have worked with
the photo-essay for over a decade in Mexico City and in twelve different
states.
My research illustrates
the current state of affairs that affects the blind.
