In 1979 I bought the negatives that these pictures were printed
from at a local resident's yard sale in Calgary, Canada. The man
I bought them from had no idea of their origin. I promptly put
them in a drawer and forgot about it for 18 years. When I rediscoved
them in November of 1997 I realized that along with the negatives
were a few small drug store prints with notes on the back indicating
the subject matter of the snapshot. These prints were few in number
but did give me some clues to the nature of the ship, its destination
etc.
Future research in libraries provided information related to the
ship and its "claim to fame" of having been in Yokohama on the
day of the quake. The two photographs of the murder victims are
the ones that instigated this photo essay and which made me an
amateur detective.
