Decades of economic neglect from those in the various governments in charge, evidence the tragic reality that Vieques has no hospitals to tend to its 9,000 inhabitant's most basic needs.

By neccesity, all babies are borned on the Big Island (Puerto Rico), and most of the dead are embalmed in Fajardo's funeral homes to be later buried in the Vieques cemetery.
