Acting as a human shield, to prevent further bombings in Vieques, former senator Rubén Berríos Martínez lived consecutively in his camp for one full year.

He survived two hurricanes, finding shelter behind a tree.  

After his arrest and expulsion from the firing range, the Independence Party leader was diagnosed with cancer.

He was recently released from federal prison after serving a four month jail term.
