Second part

As you probably heard by now when opening this page( if your audio settings are OK), we have an audio file that is possible to record with each image. This is not the only still camera that comes equipped with audio features, but it certainly is one of the best ones to implement it. The audio comes along with the option to record video, something that will certainly transform all our traditional notions of still photography. About that you can read in one of my editorials.

Also you can see in the picture to the left, that by lowering the ISO speed, and setting the saturation to normal in the menus, I was able to make a very lovely shot of those saints as seen through the window of a store in downtown Mexico City. So in fact the camera can produce some very high quality images, provided you have the right settings and don't push the demands to the extremes that the camera offers. There I am afraid it doesn't do a good job.

I went on to test the camera under other lighting conditions, and found that one could take very good images with it's built in flash and set it for less than full intensity. Yes with this camera you can set the flash at various levels something the other cameras definitely do not allow you to do. Observe the brides wedding dress, something which usually is a very hard task to handle for a camera using a flash, that of getting all the details in the white dress, it was achieved as you can see quite succesfully.

I also took some images with slower shutter speeds and found that the quality of the pictures left nothing to be desired. My friends' daughter whose wedding it was, was very happy to receive at the end a video made out of these still images, that is what is happening today with digital photography, you can make a slide show and then pass it on to video tape having used a small camera the likes of the Canon G1. With Apples' new computers you will even be able to put such images on to a DVD disc and then hand it out to be seen as movie.

But I left for the end some of the most interesting aspects of this new Canon G1 camera. Something that really makes this camera stand out above other cameras, even those at higher price ranges.

I am referring to a combination of software and hardware that really promises new options worthy of note. I have already stated in a previous review that the D1 camera from Nikon, which costs ten times what these other cameras cost, does not even come with additional software. And if you buy it separately which you have to do, it is almost as expensive as the full prices of a G1 for instance, and to boot is by far not as good.

I underscore this because the software that comes bundled with the Canon PowerShot G1 camera, is absolutely first class and just that alone is worth the price of the full camera. It comes for instance, with a program called PhotoSticher equivalent to Apples QuickTime VR Authoring Studio which by itself is a pretty expensive piece of software, and yet Canon gives to you free. At first I thought that that PhotoSticher would be some watered down version with a cheesy interface, but not at all. It works just as well if not better than QTVR Studio. It's a lot simpler to use all around and the results are just as good.
