Welcome to the
Fantastic World of Colin Jacobson

SOMBRE VOICES

There's no doubt about it, science is a very solemn business.

Please study carefully the expressions of the participants in this chapter. Do you see
the flicker of a smile, or a nuance of irreverence for the scientific method?

No, we're into poker-faced territory here, mankind at its most serious, relentlessly pushing
the frontiers of knowledge, and, it would seem, without a miniscule moment of enjoyment.

We have to admire our remorselessly pioneering colleagues, even if we may prefer not to
be stuck in the pub with them.

Or are we missing the point? Is it all a giant bluff? Are these achievers really intellectual
anarchists, playing a part which they feel we expect of them, mocking us through the
photographer's lense, perpetuating the myth of the heavy responsibilities of the scientist?
