I conclude this series of paintings with a critical look toward the construction of cultural identity. This study goes from popular culture -- from calendars with images from the 30s and 40s, to Mexican film -- and to the most ancient symbols we know: prehispanic images. Using styles taken from advertising, my paintings recycle images which expose a fiction, a search for a lost identity in the symbols which have permeated mass media -- to make an impression? Popular culture appropriates the past; a Chaac-Mool advertises package tours in Cancun and life insurance in Mexico City. Acapulco, Mexico - January, 1995 |
