may also be wondering about how I have integrated digital processes
into my artwork from the conceptual and aesthetic point of view. Even
though I have been using digital tools since the late 1980's both
as a free-lance photographer and educator, it did not make conceptual
sense to use them in my artwork until very recently. I needed a very
strong reason to use digital and I found it in a project in which
I photographed my own performances as various ancestral figures from
my own family, some real and some imagined, young and old, men and
women. It made all the sense in the world to use digital (as well
as costumes, hair, and makeup) to help transform myself into my ancestors,
while at the same time leaving obvious traces of my fabrication.
