For this photographic project, entitled Field Notes, I used the technique of the digitogram to create a digital herbarium and a beastiary. I would like to define what a digitogram is. It is, of course, an invented word, but it has its origin in the well-known early photographic process called the photogram. Based on the historical tradition of the photogram, I decided to take elements of the animal and vegetal kingdom as my starting point and place them on a device capable of registering images digitally: a flat scanner. This device functions as the photosensitive element, which it truly is because its CCD works as such. The image projected on it, after the device bounces light from the object placed on the glass, is captured and transformed into digital information capable of being manipulated and controled using a computer. Thus the name of the digitogram, which in other words stands for a digital photogram. In this way we do away with the optical and physical part of the camera and preserve what is most substantial: the obejct itself in direct and intimate contact with the surface of the sensitive paper. We therefore create a digital imprint in a unique and direct manner.

Se trata de un proyecto fotográfico denominado Cuaderno de campo en donde empleo la técnica del digitograma para realizar un herbario y un bestiario digitales. Me gustaría definir qué es un digitograma. Naturalmente se trata de una palabra inventada pero que tiene su origen en un viejo proceso fotográfico, por todos conocido, llamado fotograma. Basándome en la tradición histórica del fotograma, y como punto de partida, decidí emplear elementos de naturaleza animal y vegetal sobre un sistema capaz de registrar imágenes de forma digital: el escáner plano. Este dispositivo hace las veces de elemento fotosensible, y en realidad lo es, ya que su CCD funciona como tal. La imagen proyectada sobre éste, después de que la luz del sistema rebote en el objeto colocado sobre el cristal, es capturada y transformada en información digital susceptible de ser manipulada o controlada a través de un ordenador. De aquí el nombre de digitograma, es decir, fotograma digital. De esta forma eliminamos la parte óptico-física de la cámara fotográfica para quedarnos con lo más sustancial: el referente mismo en contacto directo y estrecho con la superficie sensible del papel. Así generamos una huella digital de forma directa y única.
