For
those interested in showing their work at ZONEZERO Q&A for submitting work |
Within ZoneZero there are two separate spaces for exhibiting work: the Gallery and Portfolios. Portfolios is open to everyone, so we cannot give each one individual editorial and design attention. Your portfolio can consist of up to five of your images and a short written statement. Exhibitions in the Gallery on the other hand are individually selected, curated, and a unique space created for each; they demand more extensive supporting material and many more images. When you send us your work, please specify whether you are submitting to Portfolios or to be considered for the Gallery. The two are not mutually exclusive, however; artists with exhibitions may show a portfolio and those not accepted for an exhibition are welcome to request that their work be shown in Portfolios. Our response time depends on our current workload; we aim to put up portfolios in two weeks, while its takes up to a few months for gallery submission review. · WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR WHEN WE SELECT WORK? |
We
are looking for meaningful work that is strong in content and form.
We are less concerned with its place in the transition from analog to
digital photography than the fact that the images and the content are
of merit.
We consider the works potential to inspire others and the coherence
of the statement it attempts to make. The selection process is rigorous.
For us it is a very difficult task, as we have two opposing values to
contend with; we want to be supportive and encouraging in order to make
this forum as open as possible, while on the other hand we must be very
demanding in order to ensure that what we present is worthy of our viewers
time. We
do not consider resumes when evaluating work, nor do we present such
information on our site. The images must stand on their own merit; this
ensures that the playing field is level. It's the work that counts,
only.
We are very interested in digital work, but this should not be understood
as an indiscriminate preference for works done on the computer. We encourage
in every way the use of all new tools, not only those that are digital. We
welcome experimental work, as long as it can be presented efficiently
on the Internet with the tools available. We aim to create experiences
exploring multiple disciplines; text, images, video, graphics, animation,
audio, and whatever else you send us or we discover.
We request a brief artist statement from every applicant. This text,
which may ultimately become part of the exhibition, must be written
by the artist. It is an important source for us in evaluating the success
of your images in conveying the meaning you intend.
· WHO MAKES THE SELECTION? |
The
decision of who will be shown and when has to do with several factors.
One is our internal workload; to mount an exhibition is extremely labor-intensive.
Another factor is the other work being shown at the moment. If someone
presents us with a project very similar to what we are currently showing,
it may still be approved, but will have to wait for a later time slot. Every
six weeks or so the editorial team of ZoneZero meets to review the work
submitted during that period. We make decisions as to what work will
be accepted based upon the guidelines stated here. Applicants
will be informed if their project was approved or notwe do not
provide an evaluation of the work or an explanation for our decision.
To provide such would place a strain on our ability to function properly
considering our available resources. We hope that our limitations are
understood and do not come across as arrogant; we only offer that which
we can deliver. Sometimes we do write a personal note to the artist,
but this is for us a welcomed option, not an obligation. We
automatically delete from our electronic files all submissions not accepted.
In this way you are guaranteed that there will be no future misuse of
your materials.
· WHAT TO SEND? |
You
may send us small electronic files by e-mail, or larger ones on CD-ROM
or zip via snail mail. You may also send photographic prints (8x10 inches
or smaller), slides, or any other flat, scannable, reproduction-quality
artwork. A one-page text presenting your work MUST accompany the images.
Remember that you are introducing us to the work, not to your resume
in disguise. Also, please be sure to include captions for the images.
We prefer a caption to reflect your understanding and telling of the
story, not a description of that which is evinced in the image. Do
not submit a project that is already exhibited on the Web.
