Vigovisiones
is the name of one of the best kept little secrets in the world of photography.
This Biennial event which has been in existence since 1986 is now into it's
sixth edition.
Vigo is the
name of a port city in the Spanish region of Galicia overlooking the Atlantic
sea. Two local photographers, Manuel Sendón and Xosé Luís Suárez,
the organizers of this initiative convinced the Municipality of Vigo to
support a unique project which consisted mainly of inviting a number of
(39 to date) photographers over a number of years to come and spend as long
as they needed, to photograph the city of Vigo as they saw fit.
Each
one of these photographers, with their unique vision and perspective then
left a legacy of at least ten images of how Vigo was perceived at that particular
juncture in time. In keeping with a long tradition of having the city being
recorded in photographs, the images produced by each of these artist was
purchased by the Vigo Municipality in order to create a unique and outstanding
collection of imagery that is now part of the cultural heritage of the city.
We are very pleased to be able to show you, here in ZoneZero, an excerpt
of each portfolio in order to acquaint you with this unique venture.
To
our knowledge there is no other similar project anywhere, at least not one
that has been running consistently for so many years with such a diversity
of internationally well known artists, and that has been kept silent with
such modesty for such a long time.

Vigovisiones
es el nombre de uno de los pequeños secretos mejor guardados en el
ámbito de la fotografía. Este evento bianual se viene realizando
desde 1986 y actualmente se encuentra en su sexta edición.
Vigo es el
nombre de la ciudad portuaria ubicada en la región Gallega de España
con cara al Mar Atlántico. Dos fotógafos de la localidad,
Manuel Sendón
y Xosé Luís Suárez, organizadores de esta iniciativa,
lograron convencer al Ayuntamiento de Vigo para que diesen el apoyo económico
a este insólito proyecto que ha consistido principalmente en invitar,
a lo largo de los años, a un número de fotógrafos (39
hasta la fecha) para que se quedaran el tiempo que fuera necesario en Vigo
con el propósito de fotografiar la ciudad y asi plasmar su visión
singular de esa ciudad.
Cada
uno de estos fotógrafos, dejaría un legado de diez imágenes
de lo que "vieron" en la ciudad de Vigo durante esa precisa coyuntura
en el tiempo. Conforme a una larga tradición de captar a Vigo en
imágenes, las obra producida por cada uno de los artistas invitados
ha sido adquirida por el Consejo de Vigo para crear con ello una colección
sobresaliente que pasa a formar parte del legado cultural de la ciudad.
Nos complace poder mostrarles aqui en ZoneZero una muestra de cada uno de
estos conjuntos y así poder conocer este proyecto único.
Hasta
donde sabemos no existe un proyecto parecido en parte alguna que haya sostenido
su trayectoria de manera consistente durante tanto tiempo, con tal diversidad
de artistas de prestigio internacional y cuya noticia se haya mantenido
en silencio con tanta modestia durante estos años.
