Women from Clay - Marcela Taboada

I received a phone call from Julia a day before full moon. She told me that I was invited to go with them to cut bamboo cane near the river. Bamboo cane is used to make the ceiling for their houses. If it is cut during full moon, the salvia comes up and covers the whole cane. Salvia is bitter and termites do not like it.

I was in the river with them before 5 AM. They started to work like ants, in an orderly way. They never stopped until they cut all the bamboo they needed. The sound produced by their machetes was in harmony with the river. Before noon they finished cleaning the canes, they tied them and sent them to Amatitlan. After that, and to my surprise, they let their hair and body loose just before taking a bath in the river.
