24 June 1981, six children in Bosnia-Herzegovina claimed that
the Virgin Mary, bathed in light and floating on a cloud had given
them a message of peace and wanted the people to convert back to the
ways of God. It was one year after Tito's death and the authorities
smelled a revolt by Herzegovinian Croats. The daily apparitions persisted
despite the crackdowns, and the 'Miracle of Medjugorje' became a focal
icon for the passions that would lead to the creation of the Croatian
state in 1991 and the ensuing civil war. Here pilgrims reach out to
be blessed by one of the six visionaries, Vicka Ivankovic, who continues
to receive daily word from the Virgin. |
