The books in this exhibition, however, are not here because
of their content; they are here because of their covers:
storyline, subject matter... everything that takes place
between the covers is, for the purposes of this show,
secondary, if not incidental. |

of Mexican photography, but not in the essential sense
that is generally attributed to the term “representation.” This
group of works does not stand in place of Mexican photography.
Its representative nature arises from the fact that it
seems to sum up a norm. So, what is “normal” in
contemporary Mexican photography?" |

Choosing sepia is all to do with trying to make the image
look romantic and idealistic. It's sort of a soft version
of propaganda. Remember when the colour supplements used
to run black-and-white pictures of famine and hardship?
Some still do. They do that because they want to make
it look more authentic. But it's a fabrication. You can't
shoot in sepia, so converting into black and white and
then into brown makes everything feel less real." |

one in the National Museum with Laurence Leblanc’s
work on Cambodia. The French Cultural Center, which began

of the young French photographer Marion Poussier, and

"In Japanese, the word for “photograph” is “shashin”. It is made up of two ideograms, “sha” meaning “to reproduce” or “reflect” and “shin” which means “truth.” The Greek etymology of the word “photograph” is to write (graphein) with light (photos). Therefore, in the Japanese mind, the process itself consists in capturing the truth, or the essence of the matter and “making a copy” of it on a surface. Consequently, the result will always contain a certain element of truth. Since the advent of photography, this way of seeing things has become commonplace throughout the world, but in very few languages is the concept expressed with such clarity. If we take as a premise the idea that Japanese photography is the fruit of a multitude of reactions, ranging from empathy to mistrust, to this process of “reproducing the truth,” it becomes easier to gain a better understanding of its astonishing diversity." |

The famous picture of the lonely man facing the tanks on Tiananmen Square in 1989, for instance, has been read, by the Western media, as a symbol of exceptional bravery in the face of a massive threat, whereas the official Chinese reading saw it as an expression of extraordinary restraint by the tank commander." |

"The first time I saw Geraldo de Barros’s Menina do Sapato was in the catalog of the exhibition of the first Latin American Colloquium of Photography: Hecho en Latinoamérica (Mexico, 1978). Had I been Brazilian perhaps I would have recognized the author’s name as that of a renowned artist. But alas, I was a naïve young man and I innocently assumed that the author was another enthusiastic youngster experimenting with the medium. In said catalog there is no date for the work, so I got the impression that it was a recent work. At the time I did not really think about art, I just liked it or disliked it, and occasionally was able to voice a few opinions about it. What I liked about Menina do Sapato was the cleverness with which the opening of the shoe had been made to double as a gaping mouth on the cartoon-like face of a little girl vaguely resembling Mafalda, Periquita, or La Pequeña Lulú." |

"Politically correct pictures?"

"In April 2008, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) reported that a photo exhibition in Paris — "The Parisians under the Occupation" — put on view for the first time 270 colour photographs of daily life in the French capital during World War II.
The article — and quite some other internet sources that I looked up — said the exhibition was highly controversial. Not for the fact that the photographs were shot by André Zucca while working for Signal, a Nazi propaganda magazine, but because the pictures seemed to give the impression, in the words of the IHT, "as though all Parisians enjoyed days in the park and promenades down broad leafy avenues, when in fact thousands, mainly Jews, were being deported to Nazi extermination camps." |

Bush administration lies and distortions went unchallenged, or were actively promoted. Fundamental and problematic assumptions about terrorism and the "war on terror" were rarely debated or even discussed.
Vital historical context was almost never provided. And it wasn't just a failure of analysis. With some honorable exceptions, good old-fashioned reporting was also absent." |

I'm a freelance professional photographer, and in recent years, the internet 'economy' has devastated my sector. It's now difficult to make a viable living due to widespread copyright theft from newspapers, media groups, individuals and a glut of images freely or cheaply available on the Web. These have combined to crash the unit cost of images across the board, regardless of category or intrinsic worth. For example, the introduction of Royalty Free 'microstock', which means you can now buy an image for $1.00, is just one factor that has dragged down professional fees." |

"In 1960 Yves Klein published a photo of himself floating in the air, apparently after jumping out of a window. The composition was thorough and you could see both the window and the pavement, both essential to accomplish the desired effect.
The subject is located in a point in which can either be falling or rising. In spite of the general opinion, I do not think that the artist was trying to convince us that he is jumping out the window, but that he is capable of establishing a harmonic –but also aesthetic- relationship between him and the air." |
