Choosing sepia is all to do with trying to make the image look romantic and idealistic. It's sort of a soft version of propaganda. Remember when the colour supplements used to run black-and-white pictures of famine and hardship? Some still do. They do that because they want to make it look more authentic. But it's a fabrication. You can't shoot in sepia, so converting into black and white and then into brown makes everything feel less real.

"The week of openings in the first Phnom Penh Photo Festival in Cambodia has been a resounding success in a country largely lacking a tradition of visual culture and training, with the exception of mass media based on television and the Thai model (i.e. that of the United States).

Most of the twelve exhibitions feature young artists. They have been mounted in prestigious galleries, such as the one in the National Museum with Laurence Leblanc’s work on Cambodia. The French Cultural Center, which began the project, displays the work of Thai artist Manit Srimanichpoon, of the young French photographer Marion Poussier, and Cambodian artist Lino Vuth."

"Photography in Japan"

"In Japanese, the word for “photograph”
is “shashin”. It is made up of two ideograms, “sha” meaning “to reproduce” or “reflect” and “shin” which means “truth.” The Greek etymology of the word “photograph” is to write (graphein) with light (photos). Therefore, in the Japanese mind, the process itself consists in capturing the truth, or the essence of the matter and “making a copy” of it on a surface. Consequently, the result will always contain a certain element of truth. Since the advent of photography, this way of seeing things has become commonplace throughout the world, but in very few languages is the concept expressed with such clarity. If we take as a premise the idea that Japanese photography is the fruit of a multitude of reactions, ranging from empathy to mistrust, to this process of “reproducing the truth,” it becomes easier to gain a better understanding of its astonishing diversity."

"There is no reason to assume that a Thai, when looking at a photograph of the Eiffel Tower, should see a different Eiffel Tower than, say, a Swiss does. What Thai eyes and Swiss eyes register is the same, how they interpret it might however be another story.

Our interpretations of pictures depend not least on our cultural upbringing. The famous picture of the lonely man facing the tanks on Tiananmen Square in 1989, for instance, has been read, by the Western media, as a symbol of exceptional bravery in the face of a massive threat, whereas the official Chinese reading saw it as an expression of extraordinary restraint by the tank commander."

"Story of a little girl with a big mouth"

"The first time I saw Geraldo de Barros’s Menina do Sapato was in the catalog of the exhibition of the first Latin American Colloquium of Photography: Hecho en Latinoamérica (Mexico, 1978). Had I been Brazilian perhaps I would have recognized the author’s name as that of a renowned artist. But alas, I was a naïve young man and I innocently assumed that the author was another enthusiastic youngster experimenting with the medium. In said catalog there is no date for the work, so I got the impression that it was a recent work. At the time I did not really think about art, I just liked it or disliked it, and occasionally was able to voice a few opinions about it. What I liked about Menina do Sapato was the cleverness with which the opening of the shoe had been made to double as a gaping mouth on the cartoon-like face of a little girl vaguely resembling Mafalda, Periquita, or La Pequeña Lulú."

"Politically correct pictures?"

"In April 2008, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) reported that a photo exhibition in Paris — "The Parisians under the Occupation" — put on view for the first time 270 colour photographs of daily life in the French capital during World War II.

The article — and quite some other internet sources that I looked up — said the exhibition was highly controversial. Not for the fact that the photographs were shot by André Zucca while working for Signal, a Nazi propaganda magazine, but because the pictures seemed to give the impression, in the words of the IHT, "as though all Parisians enjoyed days in the park and promenades down broad leafy avenues, when in fact thousands, mainly Jews, were being deported to Nazi extermination camps."

"So few film cameras were sold in Japan in the last two months that the trade body CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) has stopped compiling sales figures. According to Amateur Photographer, only 529 35mm film cameras were made in Japan in February. We're not sure how that figure was reached, but if we compare it to CIPA's own figures, it looks like there really were only 529 actual cameras sold, an incredibly low number."

"Benazir Bhutto, she was always known for her white head scarf, and I thought that showing the head scarf from behind and with all the people on the background, it would be evident who it was.

She was very emotional during this campaign rally. It was all in Urdu, and I don't speak Urdu, so I asked one of my Pakistani colleagues what she was talking about. She said, well she is talking about the need to fight terrorism, the need to fight Al Qaeda, and she was doing it with such passion. I said, well does she always yell into the microphone during this demos? No she said, this is very rare, she's very much into it. And when she left at the end of the rally, the crowd flocked down to the street and surrounded her car, and danced and wanted to touch her, and it was very emotional and is maybe one of the reasons why she took a chance and decided to stand up through that sunroof, despite clear and present danger."

"Very likely you already seen a photofinish image, either of a horse track or ones from the Olympic Games. They all look alike, the background is usually of a single color and seems stretched with a bunch of athletes or horses as they cross the finish line of a race. There's a timeline either on the bottom or at the top of the image, numbers that represent elapsed seconds from the beginning of the race. These images were generated by a camera equipped with a slit instead of a regular shutter and 35mm film moving behind this slit. Nowadays the linear CCD substituted the slit and made this cameras very similar to most scanners with have (or maybe scanners are similar to those cameras)

"It's only when I am at work that I can write; when I'm at home, I can't," says Zhang. His novel, which narrates the travails of a gravedigger plagued by ghosts, has been acclaimed across China for its creativity, if not for its critical value. Zhang began writing Ghost to relax and kill time during slow mornings at his office. "I don't think of it as literature," Zhang says. "For me it's just a game"."

What does one photograph to depict a flood? A submerged house, a boat on a highway, people wading in water?

As we boated through the branches in Jinjira we found a wicker basket in a tree. The family had long since abandoned their home, and their worldly belongings, gathered in that basket, waited patiently for their home coming".

"Rowling loses privacy action"

"In a landmark case, JK Rowling, author of the phenomenonally successful Harry Potter series, has lost a privacy battle against one of the world's biggest celebrity agencies, writes Katie Scott. JK Rowling has lost her bid to win a High Court injunction banning the further publication of an image of her infant son.

The photograph showed the author and her husband, Dr Neil Murray, pushing their then 20-month-old son in a buggy down a street in Edinburgh. It was published by the Sunday Express on 3 April 2005 with a piece about Rowling's approach to motherhood. The image was taken covertly using a long lens by a photographer working for the international agency, Big Pictures. The author claimed the image violated her son's right to privacy and applied for compensation under the Data Protection Act 1998."

Dear friends, please take the time to read the petition of fellow photographers and filmmakers whose right to photograph in public space is threatened by a new set of rules currently under consideration in New York City. The petition calls for the city to dismiss the regulations and hold a new public hearing so that the community has a saying in the shaping of the new policies. The growing problem of accessing old digital file formats is a "ticking time bomb", the chief executive of the UK National Archives has warned.

Natalie Ceeney said society faced the possibility of "losing years of critical knowledge" because modern PCs could not always open old file formats.

She was speaking at the launch of a partnership with Microsoft to ensure the Archives could read old formats. Microsoft's UK head Gordon Frazer warned of a looming "digital dark age".

Why didn't that tram finish her off?), is the one that forces Mexico to remain a poor country. Mexico has plenty of resources, in contrast to Korea Singapore and Ireland, which were examples of underprivileged countries 30 years ago. These nations used to produce massive tides of immigrants, but they are rich today, because they chose to follow a path opposed to the one of Mexico."

These have combined to crash the unit cost of images across the board, regardless of category or intrinsic worth.
