In
Ameisenhaufen's diverse correspondence are found, along with the
scientific correspondence, Christmas greetings and curiosities
such as a letter from his Ramsey, who sent him a photograph of
what he called an "Aerophant." The professor commented upon this
humorous incident in his journal: This Ramsey is getting crazier
and crazier ... (Vol. 6, p. 57). It was exactly this volume which
proved to be the most important in the attempt to reconstruct
Ameisenhaufen's life history. Unfortunately, of the total of 15
volumes full of notes, sketches, and impressions from his life
and work, up to this point only seven have been surfaced.
Between 1933 and 1950 Peter Ameisenhaufen experienced his most
intensely creative period.
During this time he classified virtually every known species.
He traveled in almost every country on earth, carried on an extensive
correspondence, and, when not traveling, worked in the laboratory,
often to the point of total exhaustion. Mrs. Schulle even had
to remind him that he should eat something every once in a while.
