Hans
von Kubert relates that the housekeeper took care of the professor as
if he were a child. Around 1949 he appeared to be a seriously weakened
in health. "I am very tired and do not know if I can endure this
life much longer"..., he confided to his journal. In early 1950 he
was diagnosed as having leukemia; the taxing medical treatment required
for the disease prevented him from further pursuing his customary work.
He decided, as a result, to leave the United States and to go to live
with Helen in the vicinity of Glasgow, where he spent the last five years
of his life. |
