This
commitment led, in the end, to his death. As he tried to come to the
aid of an elephant that had been shot by ivory hunters, he met with
a blow from the panicked animal's trunk. Wilhelm was brought unconscious
to a missionary station, where he was diagnosed as having a severe brain
hemorrhage, which ultimately led to his death.
Peter
and his sister spent a happy childhood in Dortmund in the care of their
aunt. They attended a Catholic school, where Peter was remarkable for
his exceptional diligence. When he was ten years old, he traveled to
his father in Africa for the first time.
