In
Scotland Ameisenhaufen devoted himself less and less to research;
he organized, rather, all of the materials he had collected in
the course of his life. I feel the end approaching, my end and
the end of my work. I fear, however, that my end will come sooner...,
he wrote in volume 15 of the journal, but it reassures me to know
that Helen knows exactly what she has to do when the time comes.
We do not know what instructions the professor gave to his life
companion, but Helen, in fact, stores his materials and never
published them. Two months after Ameidenhaufen's disappearance
in 1955, Helen's house burned down to the foundation, and only
a portion of documents could be saved from the fire. We can assume
that Helen, who could not store all of the materials at her home,
had hidden some of them in another place - that portion which
has now been discovered.
