Mirror Ritual

Each Saturday, the women gather in a garden to perform a ritual centered around their hair. Their native curls are straightened, dyed, and refashioned.

The young woman reflected in the mirror is Curacao's champion jogger. Talcum powder refreshes them while the day goes by in sun and shade, with gossip and laughter. Beauty is the final objective.

I feel comfortable among them and I take portraits of them all, but the most mysterious is the young woman seen through the powder on the mirror.
